Matching Headings Problems

If you don’t know the basics of these tasks yet and you’re just starting out, you should better read this lesson over here first. If you already know the basics of these tasks; you’ve practiced more than enough; and they still confuse you, then please keep reading!

1.) First of all, you should be careful not to lose valuable time in this task as it has to do with whole paragraphs. Do NOT read the whole paragraph, please just skim through each paragraph to get its overall meaning.

2.) Only read carefully the beginning and the ending of the paragraph. Just skim through the middle very quickly in order to find the connection between the beginning and the end.

3.) Now, quickly go back to the headings and start eliminating the ones that definitely do NOT fit. Usually, there will not be more than 2 statements that fit in the paragraph and confuse you. Pay attention to these two. Every single word in the heading is important. Ask yourself for every single word “Is this true in the paragraph?” “Does it represent the gist of the whole point the paragraph wants to make from the beginning to the end?” Usually, at this point you should be able to make a decision. Choose your heading and quickly move on to the next paragraph.

4.) Later, you may need to change your mind. Don’t panic, because it will be clearer and easier for you if you have practiced in this way. You will instantly know if a heading needs to be changed in the end.

Overall, what you need to ask yourself is “What does this heading actually mean?” “What does it want to say?” I’m sure you understand its meaning but when, for example, there’s a heading called “A real method”, then, when we say real, what do we mean in terms of the paragraph? Obviously, they don’t use “real” in the sense that the method exists, but most probably because some people may not recognise it as a “real method” and the paragraph wants to justify and support the method as scientific. These questions you need to ask yourselves when you read the headings and you try to match them with paragraphs.

In this video I show you examples of two paragraphs and their headings following the above way of thinking and strategy. So, it will help you even more to watch the video lesson:
